JAWS – The Ceiling – Review

My review

JAWS – The Ceiling

2019

The Birmingham band arrives with their third album and it is certainly the work of their maturation: the production of Gethin Pearson can be clearly be felt, pleasantly flowing songs, a powerful yet refined sound.

Ten songs in which the guitars can draw very interesting melodic lines, always in balance between compact rhythmic sections and in some moments even a certain intense DREAMPOP, but without emphasizing too much and I think this is quite lovely.

Ten songs to listen to without trying to compare their brave textures: this is a band really able to show that rock side that is going to disappear …

Inside this album there are some jewels, the 90s are here to listen to really intrigued, indie rock echoes and surrounds the songs with energic rhythms, it is a fresh, dynamic, contagious work …

Birmingham confirms its excellent period of form and in my opinion this band represents its spearhead.

JAMES – Pleased to meet you

July 2001

My review

We were unaware.

Amazed by the new album that our dear friends James had published.

Personally I had the pleasure of attending several dates of that tour with the final gig in Manchester in which we all learned that Tim had decided to leave the band … We had already heard the word shock in the initial Space, but we could never have imagined how it was then circumscribed to us as fans.

Ninth album for these pearls from Manchester, an album that caresses the typical James melody with an electronic which is less invasive than in Wah Wah.

PTMY is a race between the melodic expanses and the texts created by Tim which once again reaches our hearts with mastery and sweetness, where his attitude to be positive allows him to digress about themes without falling into banality.

Thirteen songs that magically take us to the boundaries of time, with stories and sound textures that look to the future, James is a caress that still knows how to excite… no longer being the band of the early ‘90s devoted to reaching the masses, it’s back to the rooms, to private listeners …

We didn’t know then that would have been their last album for seven years … difficult and sad years to accept but this work was and is full of so much strength to be able to console us just enough…

SPACE

Introduced by Mark Hunter’s keyboards, like a slow dance, our waiting is cradled by Tim, we immediately begin to be contaminated by his voice, by his unreachable writing for ability and strength …

With FALLING DOWN we find the James we know with a sensual dress, Tim’s falsetto which provokes us, David and his drums reminding us of the indies of the ‘90s, biting guitars, Jim the Lord of the Bass, and a melody that insinuates in his great opening.

ENGLISH BEEFCAKE

The album’s first masterpiece, Saul and Jim, masters of the groove, of the melody, open the doors to a Tim in great shape, with a mastery in interpreting the melodic line by changing the modality in the two verses, to enchant us at the end with a splendid obsessive falsetto, delighting our senses …

JUNKIE is the point of contact between “ old” James and those of PTMY … it is a carousel that glitters during our listening, it is the moon that sweeps the clouds …

PLEASED TO MEET YOU is another sound knockout, a slow mantra, the compact instruments becoming like a wind, with Tim’s sensual voice caressing insecurities … a song that is really a concentrate of sweetness, compactness, reaching then a thunderous final that nailed us, we remain immobile … a controlled tension with class and a great production …

THE SHINING is the suburban sun, it is a ray that grabs us in darkness and brings us to purity, to visions which help us not to sink … another gem with which we can cover our hearts …

SENORITA: how am I supposed to continue? I am a piece of skin that wraps itself around this song, I am always fascinated by the plot, the sounds, the melody that takes every beat of mine, Tim is to be kissed for the way in which he blends voice and words … we are addicted to so much beauty, sung and played to protect us because beautiful things do this …

With GAUDI we return to dance, open smiles, and the sky in the eyes … only James know how to write songs like this … A tune that fully represents the class of which they are impregnated, defining perfectly what is the pop song.

WHAT IS GOOD FOR

When we want a ballad that warms the bones just listen to this tune, a typical James song, but unattainable for many …

GIVE IT AWAY

The late ‘80s JAMES come back, with this refined, subtle melodic dazzling song, which from the palm of your hand reaches a dance that makes us free … a simple but effective refrain because it is the greatness of the James: beauty reigns in simplicity…

FINE is the Manchester of the early 2000s that shows the way, the direction, the union between a modern Dance and the never forgotten importance of melodies that can stun from a light that accompanies our dancing steps …

GETTING AWAY WITH IT (all messed up)

Who do I ask for the words? How can I describe this timeless flash, this nocturnal voice which dressed with seduction becomes human? It is a tear that paints our hearts, GAWI is the song that shows the identity card of James: people who grow up without ruining their abilities, a song that will pass through the millennia intact … we are dancers among dolphins, John Travolta, and an infinity of emotions that second by second bring us to the place where everything is the sun, splendor of life …

ALASKAN PIPELINE

Stunned, I kneel before the painting that closes this album, with this sigh mixed with sadness that suspends my breath, one of the most crazy songs ever written by the minstrels from Manchester … second after second this hidden dynamite of sweetness shatters us to rise in the sky with the heart on fire with so many vibrations, to conclude an album in this way … my God …
